- Our name Verbum-The Word. It is good to see the background of the birth of the word. In Jewish tradition, a word is not merely means sound: for them there is something with it and had an independent existece and which actually did things. This powerful characteristic of Word is greatly seen in the story of Isaac being deceived into blessing Jacob. After he had given the words of blessing nothing he could do to take that words again. The words had gone out and had began to act and nothing could stop it. Likewise we can read in the creation story: "God said... and there was..." this is a manifestation of how strong words are. This gave us an idea that the ordinary word which is in itself not merely a sound but a dynamic thing.
